Our little town of Black Mountain. NC , 15, miles east of Asheville, is advertised as the Front Porch of Western North Carolina. Well, this view below is taken from OUR front porch.

later built the main part of the house.
Barbara may retire from Mission Hospital in June of 2022. I entered the busy world of retirement in May 2011 after 7 years of teaching High School math in Tampa,FL, 15 years teaching
Math and Computer Science at Montreat College in Montreat, NC and 26 years in the Computer Science Dept at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, NC During the summers we love to travel around the US in our small RV and to use BnBs touring Europe. Trips to see our children's families in NJ, VA and Asheville,NC is also a top priority

Colleen is our busy bee having had a variety of experiences beginning with globe trotting backpacking trips, counseling at-risk kids in the Utah Wilderness, working the ski slopes of Vail, and raft guiding on the upper Colorado River. She then moved to California to get her Masters Degree in Holistic Health Education, specializing in Nutrition, and worked a variety of interesting jobs during those 3 years including: guiding at Cal Adventures at the University of California, Berkeley (teaching sea kayaking, backcountry backpacking trips, ropes courses, windsurfing, and team building events), working in the recruiting department for a biofuels company, and various other gigs throughout her stay there. After Graduating, she did a road bike trip from the Oregon/California border back down the coast to Petaluma, CA (about 370 miles). She then started as the Outdoor Program Supervisor for UCSF (University California, San Francisco) where she designed and ran wellness based wilderness trips, led sea kayaking and SUP paddles, backcountry backpacking trips, and ran the climbing wall. After 2 years there, she and Dave, who had been dating during this time, moved to Kalispell, Montana from Oct - May, surviving the winter. Then they traveled to Europe to meet Dave's family for 3 weeks in Italy for the summer and after the family left, Dave and Colleen traveled throughout Europe and the Balkans for another 5 months before returning to California. Upon their return, Dave started work as a Park Ranger at East Bay Regional Park District and Colleen got a job as the head of the whole Outdoor Recreation Department at East Bay Regional Park District (this included 65 parks over 2 counties). The two got married in May 2014 in Asheville during this time. In 2016 Dave and Colleen traveled to New Zealand for 2 months before moving back to Asheville where they bought a house. While there, Dave started grad school and Colleen started a remote job as a recruiter for a BioPharma company in CA. In 2020, Ember was born right before Covid hit the US. Dave graduated with an MS in Sustainability in 2021 and got a job as a Project Manager for Green Built Alliance. Colleen is still recruiting for the same company and they are now bi-coastal while they can still make it work! |

Can't you just see it in his eyes at 5 years old that he was thinking about being on the Broadway Stage someday. Well he was to have Broadway principal roles 5 times with four of the five receiving the Tony award for Best Musical for their year. They were Big River, Tarzan, Memphis, Gentlemanâs Guide to Love and Murder and Wicked. There were also many regional theater musicals included Little House on the Prairie where he played opposite his future wife, Kara when she was Laura and Kevin was Almanzo . Kara made her Broadway debut as the female lead in Newsies. After she toured the US as Glenda in Wicked, she was called to the same role on Broadway, later as Cynthia Weil in Beautiful-the Carol King Musical. She was also in many regional theaters around the US. Kara and Kevin have performed many times Epcot in the Festival of Broadway. They also have performed together in concerts, workshops and Disney cruises. Now they are raising their two year old son, Emerson together. |

| How quickly they grow, and grow and grow! Patrick is now a 6' 2" graduate of the Boston Conservatory with a Masters degree in Vocal Performance where was the lead tenor in many of their operas. He is currently working on a second Masters in Speech Pathology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. He will be finished in 2023. He and Sarah have been the leads in many regional theaters around the US. Sarah is continuing teaching young people chess virtually. She is starting Virginia’s first out-of-NYC franchise of the organization Chess at Three. Before the pandemic closed down the theaters, they were both busy. Patrick was the lead in ELF, She Loves Me, Les Misérables, Brigadoon,Toy Story,It’s a Wonderful Life and others. https://www.backstage.com/u/Patrick-Massey/ Sarah had the leads in South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Sound of Music, the US tour of The Wizard of Oz, Les Misérables and others.
