At times this is due to the organizations ranking system, at other times it is just a personality issue. The more profound, read personal, the change, the harder it is to effectively transfer it.

      So how do individuals get their ideas for a ‘better way’ ever get a chance to convince people with closed minds?

      Therefore:

      Carry the torch of ideals within yourself. Live by those ideals. Make reference to them indirectly as opportunity arises. Eventually people will see the gems and take them as their own.

    3. Save the Punch Line
    4. …sometimes preconceived notions about a subject matter cloud an individuals ability to listen to what you have to say about ideas surrounding that subject. By mere mention of the label, people seem to turn themselves off.

      How do we keep peoples interest when conveying information we, as messengers, wish to get across?

      Therefore:

      Do not tell them what you are talking about until it is too late. Do not use the Amway approach where you want them to do something for your own betterment. Rather demonstrate the ideas and technology before placing the label on it that the industry has.

    5. Hands On Learning
    6. …people do learn in different ways. There are some that can read. Others look at pictures. Still others must do some type of apprenticeship.

      How do we set into the minds of learning people, a message that they can keep with them beyond the initial contact on a subject?

      Therefore:

      We include case studies in parallel with the material being presented in whatever form it exists. This helps ‘set’ the idea into the mind. Additional extensions off of the mainline experience can be used, in subsequent interactions, to demonstrate the exceptions and other skills provided by the technology.

    7. With Struggle Comes Learning
    8. …you’ve been using Hands On Learning (3) to give learning people a chance to try a new skill. This seems to work well but the student feels insecure with moving out on their own.

      How to give learning people more confidence that what they are learning can be taken away and used without the expert being around?

      Therefore:

      In designing the case studies, each step has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The ending should be designed to leave some unresolved issue that they will attempt to solve but meet with limited success. This should act as a segway into the material that follows. The beginning of the subsequent exercise should get them quickly engaged in testing out their new skill as well as reiterate some of the older knowledge.

    10. …subject matter experts and other forms of consultants and teachers are viewed as outside agents that often cause more trouble than they fix.

      How can a consultant get ideas into the hands of teams doing the real work as efficiently as the situation would allow?

      Therefore:

      Co-misery is important in our interactions with people. The consultant should make it a point to work side by side with a team. They should let them know that they have struggled in a similar fashion in their own past. By letting them know you’ve been there, you will help to open their minds to the ideas and technology you bring with you. Avoid ‘swoop and poop’. This strikes too much of lecture without practice. Even though an organization may only realize a small portion of their overall problems, make yourself a part of their team and then share your objectivism once you’ve gained their trust.

…you have lots of ideas on how to help people. There are lots of people out there that need help.

How to effectively transfer knowledge and ideas from the heads of those who know to those that know not?

Therefore:

Take the classroom experience, but expand it over the course of several weeks or even months. Where you would use a case study to set a point, use a projects own work to get the points across.
