CSCI 343 Project Description

Overview

Everybody is required to turn in a project in order to complete this course with a passing grade; you may work individually or in pairs. You are required to build a database for one of the five cases described in the appendix of the Post book using Microsoft Access. The exact requirements for the database vary depending on the grade that you hope to receive.

Level 1 (for those who would be happy with a C)

  1. Create an integrated list of normalized tables for the entire application and draw the corresponding class diagram.
  2. Create the basic tables in Access along with all necessary relationships and integrity constraints. Enter at least 10 rows of sample data into the tables to test your design.
  3. Build at least three input forms and at least three reports.

Level 2 (for those who would be willing to do a little bit more for a B)

  1. All items required under Level 1
  2. Connect all forms and reports into an application.

Level 3 (for those who won't be happy unless they get an A)

  1. All items required under Level 2
  2. Add security, and backup and recovery features to the application.
  3. Do a five minute presentation of your project on the last day of class.
In order to receive the grade indicated for each level, your work must be complete and correct. For example, your data tables contain all data needed for the application and they must be normalized.

Due dates and what to turn in

When you have completed your database, FTP it into csci/343/project/project.mdb on your CSCI home directory. At noon on May 3rd a script will be run to copy your database onto my PC. If you are working with another person on this project, your csci/343/project/ directory must also contain a text file describing the contributions that each person made to the project. This file should be named diary.txt.

A bit of advice

Don't wait until the last week of class to start your project! Work on it as you learn the material required to do each step.
