CSCI 201 -- Introduction to Algorithm Design The instructor for CSC 201, Section 2, is Dean Brock. The course will meet on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, with a brief break around 7:00 pm. The textbook for the course is "Programming by Design" by Philip Miller and Lee Miller. We will cover the entire book this semester following the schedule: Sept 3 Chapter 2 Sept 10 Chapters 3 & 4 Sept 17 Chapters 5 & 6 Sept 24 Chapter 7 Oct 1 Chapter 8 Oct 8 midterm Oct 22 Chapter 9 Oct 29 Chapters 10 & 11 Nov 5 Chapters 12 & 13 Nov 12 Chapter 14 Nov 19 Chapter 15 Nov 26 Chapter 16 & 17 Dec 3 Chapter 18 You should plan on reading assigned chapters before the class lectures in which they are presented. Grades will be placed on a combination of graded homework and, including about five programming assignments, and exams. In the weighing of graded material for the assignment of final grades, homework will count one-half, the midterm one-sixth, and the final exam one-third. Students will be given accounts on ACVAX, a Vax 750 running the VMS operating systems, to work on programs. Unless explicitly instructed otherwise, you are to work on your programs by yourself from initial design to final debugging. My office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:00 to 2:30. However, I do frequently read electronic mail and sending a message to my computer account ("BROCK") is generally the best way to get a prompt response during those late, late hours you'll be working.
