Webster, NC
The latest search is for a rock described as "....at Webster North Carolina, there is one large rock bearing  numerous petroglyphs, rings cup-shaped depressions, fish-bone patterns, etc.."  This was taken from a report by James Mooney to the Bureau of Ethnography and is  the only known reference to this rock.  That is why we need local help.  Our best leads have come from folks who are interested in the  history of their area and have been willing to share their knowledge.  With just  the above reference our search is like the proverbial needle in the haystack.   We are hoping someone in the community may know of this rock or have heard stories about it.  Perhaps the fish-bone pattern has to do with the Native  American practice of arranging rocks in the river in a "fish weir" in order to  trap them.  This rock may be near a river or stream or on a bluff over looking a water source.
If you have any  information about either of these two rocks or know of any other petroglyph or  pictograph sites, please contact us. Many  thanks for any help you can give us!

WANTED:
Early survey maps of Burke County in the Table Rock area refer to a "Lettered Rock".  Reportedly, this rock has some type of Indian markings on it.  The markings may no longer be present on the rock or a portion of it may have been removed.  We are particularly interested in any historic photos or other information folks may have of Lettered Rock.
