Map of Uwharrie River Area(140kb)

The Uwharie River is unique to the Ranger District because it offers a backcountry fishing experience for anglers.  Many people use this river for canoeing.   Some smallmouth, largemouth and sunfishes may be caught in the Uwharie River. This river is managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s warmwater game fish regulations (see “for more information” section).

Access:  Take 109 north from Troy to County Road 1153.  Then turn right onto 576 (Cotton Place Road).  Take first right off of 576 onto 555 to the Uwharie River.

Camping: Primitive camping is allowed on Forest Service lands throughout the Uwharie District except where signed “no camping”.  Exceptions to this rule may occur along major Forest Service roads, where primitive campsites have been designated and signed to protect water quality and other natural resources.

For more information:  Contact the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission at http://www.ncwildlife.org/fs_index_03_fishing.htm for more information on local fishing regulations and license requirements.  Trail and topographic maps are available from:
