lower Pigeon River is located in Haywood County, near Waynesville, Maggie
Valley, and Newport, TN. The area is easily accessible by car
The Pigeon River supports
excellent smallmouth bass fishing and sometimes good redbreast sunfish fishing. One
advantage of the Pigeon River is that it can be waded more easily than larger
rivers in western North Carolina .
Species Present: smallmouth
bass and other sunfish
Seasons: The Pigeon River is
open to fishing year-round.
Access:
From Interstate 40, take Exit 7 (Harmon Den).
Follow FS 288 under the Interstate to a low-water crossing over the
River. A trail follows the River for several miles downstream,
upstream access is more difficult.
Camping:
There are no developed camping facilities on the Pisgah National Forest
in the area.
Primitive camping is allowed on Forest Service lands throughout the Pigeon River
area, except where signed “no camping”.
Exceptions to this rule may occur along major Forest Service roads, where
primitive campsites have been designated and signed to protect water quality and
other natural resources.
