Hiwassee reservoir is located in Cherokee County on the
Tusquitee Ranger District. The
reservoir is almost completely surrounded by National Forest Land thus is
undeveloped with the exception of a few coves.
This lake attracts both local and out-of state fisherman due to the wide
range of game fish species. Game
fish within the reservoir include: walleye,
black bass species, white bass, crappie, and sunfish. The Tennessee Valley
Authority maintains water levels and the dam on the Hiwassee Reservoir.
Access: From
Murphy follow NC1326 (Joe Brown Hwy) into the Grape Creek, Ogreta and Hanging
Dog communities. Follow signs to
access areas.
Hanging Dog Campground area has two boating access areas.
These access areas are free to the public.
Follow Joe Brown Hwy northwest of Murphy for five miles.
The access areas are located at the end of the campground road.
Camping: Hanging
Dog Campground provides campsites for both trailers and tents.
Restroom facilities, water, picnic and swimming areas are available
within the campground. Camping
in Hanging Dog Campground does require a per night fee and is first come first
serve.
Primitive campsites are dispersed along the shoreline in
several areas around the reservoir. These
sites provide no facilities therefore it is recommended that you leave nothing
along the reservoir but tracks.
Comments: the US Forest Service along with TVA and
the NCWRC has implemented Fisheries habitat improvements along the shoreline in
this reservoir. The Hiwassee reservoir is primarily undeveloped thus is an
attraction to most fishermen and women.
